The power of voice
My first Letter from the Editor (Volume 14, Issue 1) covers a topic I have always been passionate about. In the editorial, I detail the importance of speaking about social and political issues, and more specifically, current events taking place in our world. I encourage students and teachers to discuss these issues, as I feel school should be a place to process current events, rather than ignore them.

Vetting stories
Writing pitches is a part of our staff’s writing and brainstorming process. Before writing my Letter from the Editor, I wrote a pitch to ensure my ideas were vetted and to identify the relevance and angle of my story, processing the newsworthiness, audience, and stakeholders.
Vetting stories
I worked on "Miscalculations" during my freshman year. The story focused on the math learning disorder dyscalculia, and gave factual and personal accountings of the effects of the disability. This is an example of a piece of work in which I did not do my due diligence as a journalist and accurately represent each side of the story. I neglected to interview key stakeholders -- being the parents of a student with dyscalculia. However, the story shows my capabilities in researching and news writing and represents a major growing point for me as a journalist.
