Volume 13

As Variety Editor my sophomore year, I designed several spreads for my section and for the features section. I design two 300-word story spreads for my section -- "To learn and to love" and "Choosing happiness." Both had similar layouts but different effects. I also designed two profile layouts for the features section -- "Life as Logen" and "Cadet creed" -- both which were asked of me to do, not assigned by my section. This gave me more experience in designing and I enjoyed having those opportunities to lay out stories. This was the start of my growing love for design.

Volume 14, Issue 1

Volume 14 Issue 1 of the ODYSSEY Newsmagazine was our first ever issue in color, so I was able to experiment with design in a way I never had before, as can be seen in "Yuran's Plan." I also took a more daring approach in designing "Perno's Playbook." I ended up re-designing the spread several times, but ultimately I wanted to go for a look that was more modern and strayed from our publications traditional look.

Volume 14, Issue 2

In Issue 2, I was again able to experimented with new and fresh designs. I designed my first graphic, titled "Barbie Savior," which grabs the readers attention and draws them into the editorial abut the mystification of Africa and its people and the white savior complex. I also experimented with gradients and photo placement in "Dreamed and Achieved" and was able to perfect our Table of Contents design, which I improved upon from Issue 1.

Volume 14, Issue 3 & 4

The "Living History" spread was the first photo essay I ever designed. News Editor Jurnee Louder and I were able to put together a compelling spread that students and community members took well to. I also designed three varying profile spreads.

Volume 15, Issue 1 & 2

These layouts are the most current ones I have done for our magazine. I enjoyed making "The Hottest Corner In Town" layout, as it was unique and vibrant. The "Confronting History" layout is one of my go-to design styles, as is "Le Sack Part Deux." I enjoy trying tp use photos and their color to heighten the appeal of a spread.

Re-design

As Variety Editor, I was in charge of acquiring blurbs for and designing the Cultural Buzz section. In Issue 2 Volume 13 of the magazine, I kept the design that had been used for previous issues. However, after our magazine did a redesign during Issue 3, I was encouraged to switch it up, and produced and new and improved layout for the section. I was able to experiment with cutouts and text wraps, which I am now proficient in and use frequently.
