During my first semester of junior year, I was assigned the varsity football beat. This was my introduction to sports writing and paved the way for me to write bigger sports stories, such as the ones below.
Game Coverage
I covered our varsity football team's game against Gainesville High School. This was the first game coverage piece I wrote. I watched the game, took notes, and interviewed our head coach and players after.
Cross Country Q&A
In order to expand coverage of our cross country team, I interviewed a CCHS junior about his experience with cross country and his personal goals for the season.

My first big endeavor in sports was writing, "Perno's Playbook," an in-depth profile on CCHS' new head football coach David Perno. Because football is a major sport at CCHS, I felt an obligation to write a well-crafted piece. I tied in all aspects of his vast coaching career to inform students and community members about an important CCHS figure.
Sports staff writer Owen Churchwell and I co-wrote a sports profile on CCHS graduate Marquez Williams, who was then a University of Miami fullback and is now an NFL free agent. Owen did the majority of interviews with him, while I handled the bulk of the writing. The story was a mutual contribution, and we got to tell the story of a young athlete who was able to live out his dreams.
