Handling student/ teacher conference

While writing a story last year, I interviewed two sisters during third period. I was under the impression the girls received permission from their teachers to attend the interview. However, this was not the case and one of the students' teachers was unhappy with the fact that she missed her class, as she had frequent tardies and absences. I was able to resolve the conflict and apologize to the teacher for any wrongdoings on my part.

Dealing with parent offense

I wrote "Miscalculations" about the math learning disorder dyscalculia, which explained a CCHS' student's personal experience with the disorder, and gave information about it. I received an email from the student's concerned parent detailing the legal issues with the story. I neglected to include the parents in a sensitive story where the subject is a minor. The parent was simply informing me of her concern and her intent was to educate me about the legal problems with the story. To the left is an apology email I sent to the parents.

Incident reporting

In January, there were alleged rumors of a school shooting. This was reported to us by an ODYSSEY teammate, so we informed our adviser of this information. He contacted administration and spoke with them in the morning. There was a police report filed saying "The ODYSSEY" reported the incident, which isn't factually correct, so I spoke with and composed this email to our principal to clear up the account of what happened and the actions we took.

Staff ethics

In the fall of 2016, an incident occurred at the National Scholastic Press Association conference. One of our staff members behaved in a way we deemed inappropriate and dangerous. Concerned for her well being and our staff's we felt obligated to inform our adviser. This was a difficult situation to be in as editors and as friends to the person.

Social awareness

The photo essay on the left was published in Volume 15 Issue 2 of the ODYSSEY as a part of a tattoo photo story. We featured this student who has a tattoo in honor of his cousin. However, our school officer informed us that tattoo is possibly gang-related, so he urged us to be aware of situations like this in the future so we don't implicate anyone or ourselves as journalists.
